Life in Hawaii

What life in the islands asks of people

People picture Hawaii as a place where nobody could be stressed. Locals know better. The pressures are real, and they're easier to carry with support.

Few Options Close to Home

Psychologists are hard to find on Oʻahu and harder on Maui, Kauaʻi, Molokaʻi, Lānaʻi, and the Big Island. Online sessions mean you don't need an inter-island flight or a months-long waitlist to start.

The Cost of Living Here

High rents, multiple jobs, and long commutes leave little room to rest. Money stress and exhaustion show up as anxiety, irritability, poor sleep, and burnout.

Family and Small-Island Ties

Multigenerational households and close-knit communities are a strength. They can also mean little privacy and a lot of obligation. Seeing someone off-island keeps your sessions separate from everyday life.

Military, Moves, and Distance

Service members and their families rotate through, transplants learn what "island fever" means, and people born here watch loved ones move to the mainland. Therapy can help with the comings and goings.

My approach goes beneath the surface: not only managing symptoms in the moment, but understanding the patterns, beliefs, and experiences that shape how you move through the world. Lasting change comes from understanding yourself more clearly.

Areas of Focus

What I help with

You don't need to be in crisis. If something feels heavy, stuck, or harder than it should be, therapy is a good place to start.

Trauma & PTSD

Including EMDR for processing past experiences.

Anxiety & Overwhelm

Panic, chronic stress, worry, and burnout.

Depression & Burnout

Numbness, low motivation, exhaustion, loss of joy.

Life Transitions

Moves to or from the mainland, divorce, career change, identity shifts.

Relationship & Family Stress

Boundaries, conflict, caregiving, and patterns.

Self-Esteem & Shame

Perfectionism, self-worth, direction, and purpose.

Religious Transitions

Faith deconstruction, rebuilding meaning and identity.

Grief & Loss

Processing loss at any stage of life.

Teen Therapy

School stress, anxiety, identity, and family tension, for ages 14 and up.

No Surprises

Fees and insurance in Hawaii

My Hawaii license is new, and I'm working on getting in network with insurance plans here. Until then, sessions are self-pay at $225. Many clients use HSA or FSA funds, and I can provide a superbill on request so you can seek out-of-network reimbursement from your plan.

Not sure what your plan covers? Ask during your free consultation call, or see Rates & Insurance.

Why It Matters

Private practice vs. large platforms

Working With Me Directly

You work with one licensed psychologist who knows your full history, goals, and patterns. Treatment is shaped around you, not a generic template. The relationship deepens over time, and so does the work. As a PsyD-level psychologist, I bring advanced clinical training to every session.

Large Platforms (BetterHelp, etc.)

Convenient, but often function as matching services. You may switch providers. Depth of care is more limited. Less consistent relationship.

Why a Licensed Psychologist?

Advanced training in assessment, diagnosis, and evidence-based treatment, especially useful if you want more than surface-level coping strategies.

Licensed on the Mainland Too

Hawaii isn't part of PSYPACT, so I hold a Hawaii license directly. Through my PSYPACT license I'm also authorized in 45+ states, helpful if you split the year between the islands and the mainland.

In Our Work Together

What therapy with me looks like

  • A warm, nonjudgmental space where you don't have to explain yourself.
  • Practical tools for managing anxiety, stress, and symptoms day-to-day.
  • Deeper insight into your patterns, triggers, and relationships.
  • Clear goals and a process tailored to your specific needs.
  • A focus on meaningful, lasting change, not just coping.
  • Telehealth sessions from any island, with no inter-island flight required.
Common Questions

Before you book

Do you see clients on the neighbor islands?

Yes. Sessions are entirely online over secure, HIPAA-compliant video, so anywhere in Hawaii with a reliable internet connection works: Honolulu, Kailua, Hilo, Kona, Kahului, Līhuʻe, or a small town upcountry. If your connection is spotty, we can talk through it during your consultation.

How does the time difference work?

I'm based in California, two to three hours ahead of Hawaii depending on the time of year. My evening and weekend sessions land in your afternoon, which makes it easier to fit therapy around work and school.

Do you take insurance in Hawaii?

Not yet. I'm working on joining insurance networks in Hawaii. For now, sessions are self-pay at $225, and I can provide a superbill if your plan reimburses out-of-network care.

Is online therapy as effective as in-person?

Yes. The same evidence-based approaches apply over secure video as they would in an office, and for many people in the islands it's the most practical way to see a psychologist regularly.

Do you work with teens as well as adults?

Yes, I work with adults and teens ages 14 and up across Hawaii.
