When Your Body Is Still Reacting to the Past

Oregon's waitlists are real, and so is the feeling that you should be able to handle this on your own. You don't need to be in crisis. EMDR may be a good fit if:

  • You know you're safe now, but your body hasn't gotten the message.
  • You understand your patterns, but understanding them hasn't made them stop.
  • Sleep is difficult, you startle easily, or you're always scanning for what might go wrong.
  • There are things you've never said out loud.

How EMDR Works

When something overwhelming happens, the brain sometimes fails to fully process it, so the memory stays raw and attached to the fear of that moment. EMDR uses guided eye movements to help your brain finish what it couldn't do at the time. The memory doesn't disappear, but it loses its charge. It starts to feel like something that happened, rather than something that's still happening.

EMDR is best known for trauma, and research also supports it for anxiety, panic, grief, and shame, many of which have trauma at their root even when the connection isn't obvious.

What to expect: a 90-minute evaluation, then 4 to 6 sessions building the skills you'll need to do this work safely, then 6 to 8 sessions of EMDR processing at your pace. Complex or long-standing trauma can take longer. Read more about EMDR.

What Clients Notice as EMDR Progresses

The aim is to change how your nervous system responds, and coping skills alone don't do that. As the work progresses, clients commonly report:

  • Triggers that used to hijack you losing their power.
  • Old beliefs like "I'm broken," "it was my fault," and "I'm not safe" starting to loosen.
  • A calmer baseline: less bracing, less scanning, less waiting for something to go wrong.
  • The ability to think about the past without being pulled back into it.

Before You Reach Out

Do I have to describe my trauma in detail?

No. EMDR doesn't require you to narrate what happened in painful detail. The protocol is structured so your brain can reprocess a memory without you having to relive it out loud.

Does EMDR work over video?

Yes. Research supports EMDR delivered via telehealth, and bilateral stimulation adapts well to video sessions. Many clients also find their own home a safer place for this work than an unfamiliar office.

Do you see clients anywhere in Oregon?

Yes: Portland, Salem, Eugene, Bend, Medford, the coast, or eastern Oregon. Sessions are entirely online, so your location doesn't limit access.

Does insurance cover EMDR?

EMDR is billed the same as standard therapy. I'm in network with Regence, Aetna, Cigna, Carelon Behavioral Health, and Curative. If you're not sure about your plan, ask during your free consultation.

How is EMDR different from talk therapy?

Talk therapy works mainly through language and insight. EMDR works more directly with how the memory is stored in the brain and nervous system, using bilateral stimulation to help your brain finish processing what got stuck.

Do you work with teens as well as adults?

Yes, I work with adults and teens ages 14 and up across Oregon.
